The State of the World Environment

One of the main activities assigned to the Governing Council of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is to review the world environmental situation to insure that emerging environmental problems of wide international significance receive appropriate and adequate consideration by governments. Accordingly, UNEP has assessed the state of the global environment for 1988. Chapter I, "Environmental Quality," addresses such issues as air quality and atmospheric issues, water quality, the marine environment, land use patterns, and terrestrial biota. Chapter II, "Development and Environment," contains sections on population growth, human settlements, transport and tourism, agriculture and food production, industrial development and energy. Chapter III, "Environmental Protection Measures," deals with public perception and attitudes and national and international responses. Also included is a summary of the 1987 status report and an extensive list of references. (TW)
